MOTOROLA POWERPC MICROPROCESSORS ================================ Vision ====== The PowerPC microprocessor will drive the convergence of computing, communications, and entertainment markets and technologies by providing an industry-standard microprocessor architecture. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alliance ======== In October 1991 Motorola, Apple and IBM formed an alliance to develop an open computing platform based on the PowerPC architecture. The alliance's goal is to seize the lead in the desktop computer industry. By combining Motorola's design and manufacturing expertise, Apple's strong third party software support and IBM's research teams to create a powerful result. The main aims are to consolidate research and development on future software technologies, construct new processors, cut development costs and promote open systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerPC Microprocessor Family ============================= PowerPC 601:aimed at desktop, workstation and symmetric multiprocessing computer systems markets. Was the first PowerPC part to be developed. PowerPC 603:a processor intended primarily for the cost sensitive, desktop, and portable personal computer systems. PowerPC 604:a high performance part for uniprocessor or multiprocessor desktop personal computers, workstations and servers. Natural PowerPC 601 upgrade PowerPC 620:a 64-bit high performance part for workstation, server and multiprocessor systems.
